We checked in with Yelp to get their latest user survey of good places to cheer on the Black & Gold, and here’s what we found. Where do YOU go to watch the game?

Throw a flag, already.

It’s that time of year again, sports fans. The time when bars are packed with those who bleed black and gold. The Steelers are back in action, and this week, we’re tackling the big question of the season: Where yinz catchin’ the game, n’at?

You won’t miss a second of the action at Industry in Lawrenceville: “The walls are lined with flat screens, and the bar is encircled.” Jamie J keeps her pre-kickoff cool with “house-infused cucumber gin” and a $3 IPH or Copper Ale. Amy C does her athletic supporting at New Amsterdam. Looking at their “enormous projection screen, it’s almost like being at the game, but with better food, like bad-ass, super-tasty, hot-‘n’-juicy burgers.” During the “glorious time of year when both the Pens and Steelers are on multiple TVs,” Jenn T “sits around with fellow Yinzers” at Nico’s Recovery Room, “one of the finest dives around.”

South Hills is slammin’ with sporty action. Amanda L is surrounded by The Saloon‘s 15 TVs and 21 “seasonally rotating” taps. Continuing with the numbers game, Carson City Saloon offers DJ J “over 20 beers on tap and specials during the game,” like a bucket of Coors Lights for $11! Meanwhile, Mel Upulls up a bar stool to chat craft beer and dem Stillers” at Smokin’ Joe’s. Careful though. With over 350 bottles and 61 drafts, you could… go… all… the… way… overboard!

In the East End zone? At Hough’s “everyone is into the game and cheers, which makes for an awesome atmosphere.” Alexandra Z is equally pumped about the “ridiculous beer selection: 300+ bottled beers and 60+ drafts,” score! Will H is all about the odds, and he finds his chances of taking down “wings and a beer” are high at Buffalo Blues. They’ve got, taps 32… to down… set! Hut! Hut into your mouth! Jarrett H thinks Sharp Edge is A-OK all of the time, but on game day, “something magical catapults it into” a palace of pig skin. Half-off pizzas and $.45 wings, plus a $5.50 black and gold beer seals the deal! Here we go, Steelers!

British Retailers Turn Fish Heads Into Energy

20 Jun

Most people pitch the ‘gross’ leftover food scraps they don’t use for cooking. But in England, retailers are trying to change that practice. Chicken fat, fish heads, and leftover sandwiches are just a few of the scraps being carted off to biogas plants so they can be reused as an energy source. As business owners become more environmentally conscious, this new role for discarded food comes right on time.

Bloomberg news reports on the latest developments – read the whole article and learn more by following this link to the article on their website.

British Retailers Turn Waste Into Power

By on June 14, 2012

Bloomberg News

John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, likely never had an inkling that his culinary invention would revolutionize lunchtime. And it’s certain that he never dreamed that a cheddar ploughmans or an egg and cress would one day serve to heat British homes in wintertime.

Tesco (TSCO), Britain’s biggest supermarket chain, along with Marks & Spencer Group (MKS), John Lewis Partnership’s Waitrose, Wal-Mart’s (WMT) Asda unit, and J Sainsbury (SBRY), are carting off chicken fat, fish heads, and leftover sandwiches to biogas plants for conversion into electricity. For many British retailers, the new waste management dovetails with environmental aims. M&S announced this month that it had achieved its five-year objective of becoming “carbon neutral”—a goal many of its competitors share..

Canlis
2576 Aurora Ave. N
Seattle
WA 98109

Timeless elegance and accomplished cooking have made this spot Seattle’s special occasion restaurant for more than 60 years. Set on a slope above Lake Union with classic lines crossing Frank Lloyd Wright with Pacific Northwest design, the building opens to refined rooms that are welcoming and gracious.

Being family-owned for three generations, its professional service and world-class wine cellar, as well as its cuisine, set Canlis apart. Five sommeliers, who are gracious whether you order a $30 or $3,000 bottle of wine, help you choose the right selection from more than 18,000 bottles. A menu with both traditional favorites and contemporary seasonal fare makes deciding between truffle fries and butter-poached lobster or a well prepared steak and a twice-baked potato a true challenge.

If you like decisions made for you, the prix-fixe chef’s tasting menu ($115) shows off the talents of executive chef Jason Franey. Canlis’ signature dishes are equally impressive, especially the Canlis salad, Washington-raised Kobe-style beef, and the vermouth-bathed Peter Canlis prawns with garlic, red chilies and lime. Desserts include a Grand Marnier soufflé (order in advance) or a luscious molten chocolate cake.

Extend your evening by enjoying brandy in the bar while listening to jazz or show tunes played on the house Steinway. No matter when you leave, your car will magically be waiting.

Eiffel Tower Restaurant
3655 Las Vegas Blvd. S. (Flamingo Rd.)
Las Vegas
NV 89109

If Las Vegas were the house, this restaurant would be the best seat in it, for this fine-dining perch in Paris’s Eiffel Tower has an unobstructed view of the Strip, including Bellagio’s dancing fountains across the street. Burgundy velour banquettes and a Belle Époque décor set a plush stage for the contemporary French offerings.

Among imaginative appetizers, we like the cold foie gras torchon with duck prosciutto and a fig compote, offered for lunch and dinner. Luncheon sandwiches include steak with Roquefort cheese and a red onion compote. A salad favorite is created with lobster, shrimp and crab. The dégustation menu dreamed up by the chef each evening is a popular choice, featuring menu items such as warm lobster salad with fingerling potatoes and toasted caraway seeds; butternut squash soup with duck confit; sautéed sea bass; venison chop; Eiffel Tower desserts or a soufflé; and petits four.

Wine can be paired with the tasting menu for a complete experience. Among à la carte dinner entrées, try the slow-roasted filet of Atlantic salmon with Pinot Noir sauce. Prices are high, but dishes such as the individual Eiffel Tower beef Wellington with sautéed snap peas are worth it. The wine list consists of more than 900 labels.
